AMPOSTA

Amposta is the capital of the region of Montsià. It is located on the right border of the Ebro , just at the meeting point between the inner delta, and plains, between the municipalities of Tortosa and Sant Carles of the Ràpita. It has an extension of 136 Km2 and includes a population of 17,000 inhabitants. It has a sector of coast in the interior of the port Alfacs, separated from the rest of the territory by the lagoons of l'Encanyissada and La Tancada. The west sector the mountain range of Montsià can be found, emphasised by the peaks of Mata-redona and the Montsianell. As for other activities, agriculture, mainly the world renowned rice but also there are also olive trees, carob trees and vegetables. The cattle ranch is of pig, bovine, goat cattle, and ovine. The industrial activity is based on the food sector. Amposta also is a great tourist centre of services and fluvial fishing is important, especially at Encanyissada. In 1908, when Juan Palau Miralles was mayor , Amposta obtained the title of city in agreement with a Real decree signed by king Alfonso XIII. During his reign important work was done with city-planning, improvement and the construction of the “ National Schools ”,the “Casas Baratas” (Cheap Houses), the municipal gardens the

,retaining wall of the river and most important of all, the construction of the Suspension bridge over the Ebro . The 15 of August of 1915 the act of positioning of the first stone of the Suspension bridge was celebrated. The company Society of Hydraulic and Civil Constructions were in charge of its construction and J.Eugenio Ribera, the engineer, author of the project. En 1919 the bridge was practically finished, but it was not until the 1921 that, general Primo de Rivera, inaugurated it. The outbreak of the Civil War, on the 18 of July 1936, broke, like all the country, the growth of the city. On the 10 of March 1938 the Suspension bridge was bombed and destroyed. To cross the river a bridge made with boats was built, but sank with the crossing of tanks from the republican army in its retreat, after the rebels occupied Amposta, the 18 of April 1938. In 1939 the tasks of reconstruction of the Suspension bridge began, high-priority of restoring the communications to the main routes of the State. Between the decades of the 40's and 50's, after the abandonment of the cultivation during the war, Amposta experiences a very important growth of population, fruit of resuming rice cultivation, and the European need for this cereal, the black market and the development of new areas for cultivation. During the following years work was carried out including, paving and construction of sidewalks and the new City council and the Municipal Market are built, among other equipment.
The changes in town planning modified the general layout of many streets and districts of the city, responding to a continued increase of the population and to a diversification of the local economy. The economic development has been strongly marked by agriculture. The cattle has been another of the traditional activities, the saltwort and liquorice disappeared years ago already. With respect to the industry, the insufficient electrical provision, the deficient communication and the deficiency of skilled labour, are outlined as key factors for the delayed industrialization of the population. From the XIV century to end of the XVIII century the most important industrial activity had been salt. Later, as a result of the agricultural activity, the growth of the rice industry begins and the proliferation of oil mills. Although agriculture continues being one of main the activities of the city, Tourism, industrial sectors and services are acquiring more importance. At present Amposta has become the motor of the region of the Montsià and the main city of the Ebro lands.
